How to choose right pair of running shoes?

There are so many kinds of running shoes on the market today. What brand is better? What is the best running shoes?

The answer is that there's no one particular brand or one perfect pair of shoes that can work for all. Instead, there's a pair of running shoes that can work the best for you.

But how to find that one good pair of shoes?

Let me tell what kind of shoes exist and what to pay attention to while choosing the best pair of running shoes for you.

Several criteria to pay attention to:

  • what is you foot pronation?

  • what distances do you usually run/train for: 5K, 10k, half marathon, marathon, ultras?

  • what terrain do you run on most: crushed gravel, dirt roads, asphalt, concrete path, technical trails, mountains, etc?

Types of pronation:

  • neutral

  • over pronation

  • over supination

The most common are Neutral and Over Pronation.

The best way to determine type of your foot pronation would be to visit your local running specialty store, where they can test you on the treadmill and help you choose proper running shoes. My favorite running store is jackrabbit.com

But if you don't have a running specialty store in your area, I find very helpful shoe finder by Brooks.

Examples of shoe models for neutral pronation:

  • Brooks Ghost (mid cushioned); Brooks Glycerin (high cushioned)

  • Adidas Solar Glide; Adidas Solar Boost

  • Saucony Ride; Saucony Triumph

  • Nike Pegausus; Nike Vomero

  • Asics Culumus; Asics Nimbus

  • On Running Cloud Fly

  • Hoka Clifton; Hoka Bondi

  • Mizuno Wave Rider

Examples of shoe models for over pronation:

  • Brooks Adrenaline

  • Adidas Solar Glide ST

  • Nike Structure

  • Mizun0 Inspire

  • Saucony Guide

  • On Cloud Flyer

  • Hoka Arahi; Hoka Gaviota

Average life of running shoes are between 200-500 miles or 4-6 months, whatever comes first. Having couple pairs of running shoes to rotate can prolong their life a bit.

As for size, running shoes should be about 1 size up comparing to your regular shoe size to prevent sore toes, blue or lost toe nails.

Run with pleasure!
