I used to live in Texas where it was always more or less warm and running daily was possible without any stress. Once I moved to Colorado I learned that on cold and snow days it is way more mentally challenging to go for a run outside. So I had to come up with solutions on how to deal with it.
Here are several tips and tricks that help me running consistently in winter time.
I have to prepare my running clothes in advance from evening to eliminate decision fatigue from what to wear.
Get outside as soon as possible before I start coming out with reasons why I shouldn't go for a run.
I focus on the feeling of accomplishment that I will have after finishing my run. Feels good to get hard thing done - dopamine, endorphins.
I start my run with intention to run at least 30 minutes and then run more if it feels better. Always remember - shorter run is way better than no run. When you break the chain of consistency, it is way harder to get back on track than just keep running regularly.
I prepared the mantras that help me get through the run when it gets very uncomfortable, for example: "Every day in every way I get stronger and stronger". I also focus on each mile I am in and mostly don't look at my pace and I go based on how I feel. Anyways it can be more challenging because of the snow or because it very cold, which impacts the pace and you actually start running slower.
I found a local group run in my area, which makes it way easier to show up for a run, because you have to be there at certain time and running with people in challenging weather conditions is way easier them on my own.
I also found a coach, who creates schedule for me and supports me. No more worries about what to do and when to do it.
I invested last year in the treadmill and that was one of the best investments in myself that I never regret about.
I wear many layers of clothes, it is better to be warmer, the get cold. Also layers can be removed once body warm up a bit. or can be put back on if needed.
The other question may arise, how to motivate yourself for treadmill run, I know many people hate treadmills.
My trick is to change my association of running on treadmill with pain to association with pleasure. So I started watching educational content (online courses or Kipchoge breaking sub 2 hours marathon) while running on treadmill, thats how I have a win-win situation - I get my run done while learning something new, that how I accomplish 2 things at same time and it takes away attention from discomfort of treadmill running.
