Marathon is my favorite running distance. It's challenging but very powerful distance, that gives you a feeling of great accomplishment and open ups for you new opportunities in different aspects of your life.
In February 2017 my husband and I finished our first marathon. So Austin Marathon holds a special place in my heart. I have learned a lot while running it and would like to share with you several tips on how to finish it strong, while enjoying the process.
Whether you are running full marathon or half marathon those several tips will help you finish your race stronger.
Start your race patiently. Find your your goal time pace group, stand right with them or little bit behind them. Once the race starts hold yourself not to go out faster than your pace right away, that will pay off later. Usually people who go out fast right away, finish later than those who where patient.
Don't try anything new on the race day. Plan your nutrition strategy in advance. Don't try any new food or drinks on the race day and while running marathon or half marathon.
Stay hydrated. Bring your water with you or take at least a sip of water at each water station. You may want to consider adding electrolytes. My favorite one is Nuun.
Breathe. Control your breath with adding several deep inhales and exhales to calm down your heart rate if it's to high or if you are little bit too worried.
Follow your plan. Stick to your race plan and don't run faster than your planned pace even if you feel faster before mile 2o (or mile 10 if you are running half marathon).
Run smart uphills and downhills. While running uphill concentrate on your breath, move your arms, make shorter steps and look forward (don't lean back). While running downhill, let your body lean forward, don't overstrike.
Smile. Relax your body, thing of something good, be grateful for running the distance you trained for so long and smile. Smile makes everything better.
Enjoy the race, believe in yourself and leave a room for surprise!
