How to finish 5K strong or my Austin 5K experience

Every race must have a plan wether it is a 5K or a full marathon.

5K is a fast distance that usually runs at close to maximum effort, which is not easy to sustain for all 3.1 miles.

On February 16, 2020 I ran one of the strongest and the fastest 5K ever - 20 min 03 seconds. The key in succeeded on that race was being patient.

The race was delayed by an hour. Usually I would start getting worried, but I practice my patience through meditation daily. So I was relaxed and calm.

Prior the race day I analyzed the elevation of course specifics. Austin 5K is basically 1.55 miles uphill with some flat portion and light downhill in very beginning and 1.55 miles of downhill with a little bump before finishing line.

Once the race started most of the runners went out so fast. I decided to follow my race plan strategy. So I started out patiently with my race pace goal while other runners were way faster than I am. I was focused on looking straight, control my effort, my breath and pace. Once I reached uphill part I was concentrated only on my effort and I knew that if I'm going to be patient on uphill, I will be able to push myself on downhill. Many runners who started faster than I did were slowing down and I was speeding up. Once I reached the turn around cone I maximized my speed and was flying to the finishing line.

I crossed finish line as 3rd female and it felt so powerful to finally run that effortless 5K.

Every race needs to be started patiently. Once you master your race strategy you will succeed more often.
